Pip found one large moonberry at the bottom of his picnic basket. Maya and Comet both looked at it.

“One berry,” Pip said. “Three friends.”

Comet suggested that the fastest friend could win it. Nell, who was resting nearby, raised one small eyebrow.

Maya suggested asking the baker for help. They carried the berry into the kitchen, where the baker washed it and cut it into three pieces.

The pieces were not exactly alike. One had a little leafy mark, and one was shaped like a crescent.

Pip offered the first choice to Maya. Maya chose the crescent. Comet chose the piece with the mark. Pip took the last piece happily.

They tasted their berry together.

“It was bigger when we shared it,” Comet said.

“Not the berry,” Maya replied. “The happy part.”

Pip washed his basket for tomorrow. One berry had been enough for a small, sweet ending to the afternoon.
