Comet noticed a long fox on the garden path. It had his ears and his tail, but its legs looked enormous.

“That fox is following me,” he said.

Maya smiled. “It is your shadow.”

The gardener showed them how the low evening sunlight made long shadows. Comet moved one paw. The shadow moved a paw, too.

Maya stood beside him. Her shadow stretched toward the gate.

They waved, stood still, and made shapes with their hands and paws. Then a cloud passed in front of the sun. Their shadows became faint.

“They are taking a rest,” Comet whispered.

The cloud drifted away, and the shapes returned.

Before going inside, Maya drew a fox with very long legs. Under it she wrote COMET’S EVENING SHADOW.

Comet looked at the picture by the lamp. He did not have enormous legs after all, but he liked knowing why his shadow sometimes did.
