The baker invited Maya and Comet to decorate paper place mats for supper. She gave them a bowl of little star shapes and one spoon.

Maya poured a whole spoonful onto her mat. The stars covered the middle, leaving no room for her drawing of the moon.

Comet scattered his stars all along one edge. His mat looked like a sky tipping sideways.

They looked at each other and laughed softly.

“Let’s try setting them out before we paste,” Maya said.

They gathered the loose stars back into the bowl. Maya made a circle around her moon. Comet made a winding trail from one corner to the other.

The baker helped them paste the shapes down. Then she placed their mats on the supper table.

Maya’s moon had room to shine. Comet’s star trail had somewhere to go.

They had used the same little bowl of stars, but taking time to plan gave each mat its own sky.
