Ada’s kite had torn in the wind. She sat beside the garden gate with its loose paper in her lap.

Comet wanted to make her smile. He told a funny joke, but Ada only gave a little nod.

Maya sat beside her. “Would you like company, or a quiet minute?”

“Company,” Ada said. “And maybe help fixing this.”

The baker brought paper and paste. Ada chose a round patch shaped like a moon. Maya held the kite still while Ada pressed the patch over the tear.

Comet drew two small eyes and a smile on the patch, after asking Ada if she wanted them.

When the paste had dried, the kite was ready for another day.

Ada smiled at its new face. “My kite has a moon friend now.”

They put it safely inside the porch. Comet learned that a joke was not always the best help. Sometimes he could ask, listen, and hold the paper steady.
