The bakery was nearly ready to close. The last buns were packed, and the table was clean.

“There is one little job left,” the baker said.

Comet searched for crumbs. Maya checked the chairs. Everything seemed finished.

The baker pointed to a lantern beside the door. “We leave this light on until the conductor comes back. It helps him see the porch step.”

Maya and Comet waited with her inside the bakery. The conductor arrived carrying the basket he had borrowed for the picnic.

“Thank you for the light,” he said. “And for saving me a place to return this.”

Now the baker could turn the lantern off. She closed the door and checked its latch.

The friends walked home together under the evening stars. Comet had not found another crumb, but he had found another kind of job: waiting with someone until the day was safely done.

The bakery windows grew dark behind them, ready for tomorrow.
