The baker made a pretend ice-cream stand for the garden picnic. There was one wooden scoop and a bowl of soft paper balls.

Maya wanted to scoop first. Comet wanted to scoop first, too.

They both reached for the handle. The bowl wobbled.

“Let’s make a plan,” Maya said.

Comet thought for a moment. “You can serve Pip. Then I can serve Ada.”

Maya scooped a blue paper ball into Pip’s cup. She handed Comet the scoop when she finished.

Comet chose a yellow ball for Ada. He called it Moon Flavor.

After that, they took turns serving the other friends. While one scooped, the other asked which pretend flavor the customer wanted.

The bowl stayed steady. Everyone got a turn.

When the picnic ended, Maya and Comet made one last pretend treat together: two paper scoops, blue and yellow, in a single cup. They named it Friendship Flavor.
